Thank you for sharing this.

It never ceases to strike me that Jesus saves his harshest words for the religious leaders abusing their spiritual authority and for abusers who harm the vulnerable (millstones and all that). Your presentation of Matt 26:24 here seems to fall in line. As a fellow Dare-We-Hoper, there is still something that resonates as true in the sayings of Church Fathers like St. John Chrysostom when he says, "The road to hell is paved with the bones of priests and monks, and the skulls of bishops are the lampposts that light the path."

Back when the PA Grand Jury report dropped, I posted to Facebook, borrowing a line from Chesterton: "It's terrible to contemplate how few _____ are hanged." Appropriately enough, Dante places the betrayers in the deepest circle of Hell in the jaws of Satan. Looks like a bountiful buffet for Beelzebub.

Amén! I had my own situation (same song, different lyrics) as a very young child with a “man of God” that has shaped my life in many ways (good and bad). I am so thankful that all along I was able to separate our loving God from his very broken church. I’m so glad that you didn’t give up on God either.
